A Bioprocess Engineer is a professional capable of understanding, modifying, and optimizing the biological and chemical phenomena carried out by living organisms and/or their derivatives, with the ability to make all the benefits of biotechnology accessible to society.




The main objectives of a Bioprocess Engineer are:

1. To be a biological process professional, who uses living organisms or derivatives for industrial application.

2. To promote the creation of biotechnological enterprises al local, regional, and national level.

3. To be a high-quality human resource on the biotechnological area, for academic and industrial performance.

4. Be an environment-responsible and ethical professional.

5. To encourage the formation of multidisciplinary groups which promote the creativity and self-updating, able to exploit information technologies.

6. To contribute to the development of bioproduct processes which face social requirements.




Job prospects

Bioprocess Engineering graduates can obtain products of biological origin that can be useful to all industries related to the biotechnological sector (among the most relevant: chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and food science), health, biomedical, and biotechnological research centers, and even public and private institutions of medical services. This disciplinary field influences other industries that benefit from significant advances in biotechnology (generation of alternative energy sources, remediation of the environment and mining, biomedicine, biomaterials, petrochemicals, etc.).

Additionally, given the need for highly qualified professionals in this area, other possible occupations considered as opportunities are: consulting companies specialized in biotechnology, public or private agencies for the development and innovation in biotechnological sectors or related fields and the possibility of starting their own biotechnological company. Thus, the Bioprocess Engineer can be positioned in local, national, and global industries, where they can hold managerial positions in quality, processes, innovation, waste management, among others.
